The tapered (EDM) chuck is a universal closure adapter for Mesa’s Torqo 1502-1600 torque testers. This chuck was designed to accommodate most 26-32mm OD closures, regardless of serration pattern. This includes those that have been deformed during the production process due to hot filling, induction sealing or overtorquing. One of the greatest advantages of using the universal chuck is that it reduces the number of required change parts when compared to the standard serrated chuck design.
Proper Use of a Universal Chuck
While the tapered teeth design overcomes the dimension and serration sensitivity of the standard serrated chucks, special attention must be made to ensure that the cap is fully seated inside the chuck. Caps that are not fully seated can be damaged by the sharp teeth. This is not so much of an issue during production (one cap is only tested one time), but it can become a problem when verifying the Gold Bottle Torque verification device. Since the cap is permanently mounted on the Gold Bottle shaft adapter, every time the cap is not fully seated, the sharp teeth will mar into and shave material off the closure. Eventually, the cumulative damage to the cap may render the verification device inoperable, therefore it is very important to ensure that the universal chuck is fully seated on top of the closure.
